As expected, disrupting U.S. arms sales to Taiwan is one of the real top priorities for China heading into Thursday's summit between Trump and Xi.

However, China is not naively believing that they can actually get Trump to agree to a wholesale suspension of U.S. arms sales to Taiwan altogether, primarily due to the expected pressure from U.S. Congress. Beijing's calculation would be to make its demand very strong, and try to scale it down gradually if Trump may seem to be open to hear their perspectives and proposals and go from there.

The goal is to further delay the $14 billion arms package to Taiwan, and continue to shape Trump's thinking and decision-making about this to potentially further weaken U.S. commitment to provide defense support to Taipei.
