A Chinese diving instructor who markets himself as an AIDA / SSI trainer was detained in Indonesia after a video showed a scuba diver spearing a protected hawksbill turtle in Raja Ampat — one of the world’s most important marine parks.
Follow-up clips claimed the animal was cooked.
What is confirmed
• When / where:
The suspect was in Raja Ampat 9–11 September 2026. The shooting is reported in the Fam Islands / Piaynemo area, a conservation zone and UNESCO Global Geopark site.
• Who:
Indonesian media name a Chinese national Wei Shang (商伟), initials WS. Online he runs 阿莫澳洲潜水 (Douyin ID 32831516356, WeChat amodive), based in Sydney, with ~88k followers.
His bio calls him an 11-year AIDA freediving director and SSI / IDA diving director, and lists training work across Indonesia, Malaysia and other countries.
• What the video shows
A 36-second clip circulating from 13 September shows a diver in scuba gear aiming a speargun at a turtle resting near coral and shooting it. Raja Ampat’s conservation authority said that matches the incident.
• After the hunt:
Separate photos/video shared in Chinese diving circles show a turtle in a cooking pot. A local account posted that they had cooked and eaten it.
• Arrest: On 14 September 2026 he tried to leave via Sultan Hasanuddin Airport, Makassar. Immigration stopped him after Raja Ampat’s district government asked that he be blocked from departing.
Officials said he would be sent back to Papua for investigation.
Why it is illegal, not just “ugly”
• Hawksbill turtles (Eretmochelys imbricata / 玳瑁) are Critically Endangered on the IUCN Red List and listed on CITES Appendix I. Indonesia protects all sea turtles. China lists the hawksbill as a Class-I protected wild animal. Killing, possessing or eating one is a wildlife crime in both systems.
• Raja Ampat is a marine protected area. Local park chief Hasan Makassar publicly condemned a tourist bringing destructive gear into the reserve and killing a turtle. Spearfishing in that zone is not a grey area.
• Conservation officers said similar speargun problems with visiting operators have happened before; this case was filmed.
The credentials being circulated
• AIDA International Instructor Trainer — name Wei Shang, cert date 18 Aug 2015, listed active through 2025.
• SSI React Right Instructor Trainer — Pro ID 71770, cert Dec 2017 — card marked NON-TEACHING STATUS.
That is the contrast driving the outrage: a man selling “build China’s professional diving system” on Douyin, then appearing in a park with a speargun on a resting protected turtle.
Status as of 15 Sep 2026 He is in Indonesian custody / transfer, not a closed court case.
Identity, video, location, species protection status, and the airport stop are reported by Kompas, CNN Indonesia and Chinese-language outlets.
AIDA/SSI disciplinary action has been discussed online but is not a finished public ruling in the news so far.
And then Chinese tourist started asking themselves why they are not welcomed everywhere.
