China still has FMD. Raw cloven-hoofed meat from there is banned for a reason.
Taiwan already paid this bill.
1997 outbreak: ~3.85 million pigs culled. Losses around NT$170 billion. Overnight, Taiwan lost its main pork export market to Japan — roughly NT$50 billion a year at the time. After 23 years of vaccination and control, it only regained “FMD-free without vaccination” status in 2020.
Japan itself lost ~300,000 cattle and pigs in Miyazaki in 2010. It has stayed free since. One leak of that goat meat into a Hokkaido barn and the clock starts again.
