In a small mountain town there lived a clockmaker named Elias who never sold a clock that chimed.
People thought him strange. Every other shop filled the square with bells and hours. His shop was quiet.
A wealthy merchant once entered and demanded the finest clock in the town.
Elias showed him a plain wooden case with no bell, no gong, no striking hammer.
“It tells the time,” Elias said, “but it does not announce it.”

The merchant laughed. “What good is time if no one hears it?” He bought a loud clock from the shop across the street and left.
Years passed.
The merchant grew rich, then restless. His house was full of clocks that struck every quarter hour. Servants jumped at every note. Guests left early. His own sleep broke into pieces.
One winter night he returned to Elias’s shop. The old clockmaker was still there, polishing the same quiet case.
“I cannot hear myself think,” the merchant said.

Elias wound the silent clock and set it on the counter. “Time does not need an audience,” he said. “It only needs to be kept.”
The merchant took it home.
He stopped the other clocks one by one. The house grew still. For the first time in years he heard the fire, the snow against the window, and the sound of his own breath.
He never bought another chiming clock.
