Only a democratic China can finally bring Mao and his totalitarian legacy to a full historical reckoning—dismantling his cult of personality, exposing the crimes committed in his name, and breaking the political system that keeps his legacy alive. Only then can Mao’s ghost be exorcised once and for all and consigned to where it belongs: the darkest pages of history.
