Australia: Australian Research Council chairman Peter Shergold has championed a crackdown on foreign research collaborations, as the science funding agency sets new safeguards to protect the public from terrorism, cyber attacks and espionage.
Warning of the rising risk of foreign interference in universities, Professor Shergold said researchers can no longer claim they are “innocently getting into these relationships’’.
“The world has changed significantly in the last few years so that things that may have been acceptable 10 years ago clearly now have a much greater risk attached to them,’’ he said.
