After failing to pin it on Nepal, Beijing is now pinning it on the planet.
Day 1–3 of the Gyirong/Jilong disaster: official line was almost a refrain.
「因尼泊尔一侧发生泥石流灾害」
“Because a debris flow occurred on the Nepal side.”
MFA: triggered by a high-altitude glacier collapse in Nepal. Embassy: theories that China failed to warn, or that Tibetan construction destabilized the mountains, are “fake news.”
Day 5, Tibet government press conference.
Same disaster. New culprit.
He described the broken glacier as equivalent to more than 60 soccer fields, rushing downstream at the speed of a high-speed train. From collapse to hitting China’s Gyirong Port: 6–7 minutes.
Translation: Nepal is still where the ice fell.
Climate warming is now why it fell. The frame moved from “their mountain” to “everyone’s atmosphere.”
If “climate warming” is the official cause, the next question writes itself.
China is the world’s largest annual CO₂ emitter — roughly 30%+ of the global total. Since 2000 it has accounted for the majority of the increase in global emissions. That is not a Western talking point; it is the inventory.
So when a CAS scientist stands at a government podium and says the glacier destabilized under “the long-term effects of climate warming,” the implicit defendant is no longer Kathmandu.
It is “the world.”
Conveniently diffuse. Hard to invoice. Does not have to answer why Gyirong Port — a trade artery China chose, rebuilt, and kept open in a known high-hazard Himalayan gorge — sat at the bottom of a 3,000-metre drop with minutes of warning.
Science on Himalayan ice loss is real. Warming on the Third Pole is faster than the global mean.
That does not require a press conference to launder a border disaster into a planetary abstraction after the “Nepal side” line stopped being enough.
If the cause is long-term warming, the largest single current contributor is sitting in the room that called the press conference.
