The Singapore One-Dollar Coin
In the mid-1980s, Singapore began constructing its underground Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) train network.
Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew (李光耀) consulted a Feng Shui Grandmaster, Venerable Hong Chuan (宏船法師), the Abbot of the Kong Meng San Phor Kark See Monastery. The Grandmaster warned that digging deep underground tunnels across the island would rupture Singapore's "Dragon Veins" (龍脈) or "meridians of positive energy". Such a disruption would bring economic ruin and misfortune to the nation.
In order to neutralize the bad Qi (氣) or energy, the Grandmaster stated that every single household in Singapore must keep a Bagua (八卦).
Venerable Hong Chuan told PM Lee Kuan Yew,
“If you want to continue with the project, then you must give every Singaporean household, every single one of them a Bagua. Or else Singapore will sink.”
PM Lee Kuan Yew ordered that an octagonal rim resembling a Bagua be inscribed onto the inner edge of the new Singapore one-dollar coin. The coin was introduced in September 1987, just two months before the MRT opened, and this ensured every citizen of Singapore would naturally carry a protective Bagua in their pockets.
