I’m so speechless I don’t even know what to say. Just because I took photos of the Wangwang posters in Dalian, the Dalian police tracked me all the way back to my hometown overnight to interrogate me. I really hope my boss is okay—they are truly, truly wonderful people. During the interrogation, I learned that another person with a Beijing IP also took photos of the poster, and the police are heading out to arrest them tomorrow...

At the end of yesterday’s interrogation, I asked the interrogators: "Why are you arresting people over a poster about protecting pets?" I knew their nature all too well; I just wanted to hear their high-sounding excuses straight from their own mouths.

First, they said: "Why risk ruining your stable job and life over things like this?"

Then they added: "If you really care about stray pets, just go buy some sausages to feed them."

Finally came a lengthy lecture on "foreign hostile forces": "Unlawful elements are exploiting your goodwill to try to subvert state power."

I felt profoundly saddened. Ordinary people are easily pushed into desperate situations; grass-roots law enforcement officers mechanically execute orders from above; while the party at the top—so weak and hollow inside despite its tough front—resorts to thunderous crackdowns just to suppress ordinary citizens. When the iron fist strikes you personally, how can you expect me to trust the "confidence and strength" you brag about?

Since 2022, I’ve been interrogated four times in such an "absurd and inexplicable" way, all simply because I expressed my discomfort like a normal human being. I know that those who dare to speak out must endure far harsher punishments.

That’s why, even though I now mostly choose to stay silent and pretend all is well on domestic platforms, I will never consider those who keep speaking out to be naive. I also believe there are many others who, despite not charging on the front lines of public platforms, practice doing the right thing in their daily lives. They are all deeply worthy of respect.
