Wuhan, China — August 9, 2026
Near the famous Yellow Crane Tower, Chinese urban management officers (chengguan) and plainclothes men surrounded and brutally beat a male and female street vendor after a confrontation.

Videos show one uniformed officer repeatedly punching the woman in the face until she fell, then using handcuffs as a weapon to strike the man.

Even after the man could no longer resist, the officer grabbed a plastic water bottle and smashed it into the woman’s head, knocking her down again. Other uniformed officers stood nearby watching and filming — none stepped in to stop it.

The footage spread rapidly online and triggered widespread anger. Chinese censors then mass-deleted the videos to suppress discussion.

This is not a rogue incident. China’s urban management system is government-run. When violence occurs, officials frequently claim the attackers were only “temporary” or “part-time” hires — a standard deflection that lets the state maintain the force while denying responsibility for its brutality.
