His weapon was time preference. You value a dollar today more than a dollar next year. Everyone does. That preference creates a spread, and that spread is interest. Interest requires no exploitation, no class war, no capitalist villain grinding workers into dust. The math works without any of that. Böhm-Bawerk simply followed the logic where it led.
His critique of Marx in Karl Marx and the Close of His System (1896) remains the clearest demolition of labor theory of value ever written. He showed that Marx contradicted his own premises by Volume III of Capital. The criticism is precise, a chapter-level forensic dissection.
What makes him genuinely great is the combination: original theory AND devastating critique. Most economists manage one. He delivered both.
Free market thinkers today, building business cycle theory or capital theory, are still standing on the foundation Böhm-Bawerk laid before most of their great-grandparents were born.
