A hotel GM from China’s largest hotel group reached out to us.

He is a long-serving general manager of Jinjiang Hotel Group (锦江酒店集团), the Asia No.1 / global No.2 hotel chain controlled by Shanghai SASAC through Jinjiang International. Brands under the group include Hilton Hampton by Hilton, Jinjiang Inn, 7 Days, Vienna, Livan, etc.
He writes:

We used to have four fixed days off per month as contract staff. Since 2022 the company forced everyone onto the “flexible working hours” system and made us sign the agreement.

In the Yangtze River Delta alone, multiple frontline hotel general managers have died suddenly on the job. In the first half of 2025 alone there were three consecutive cases. The company has been covering them up.

Even worse — our social insurance and housing provident fund are paid through a Shenzhen third-party company at the absolute minimum standard. Only a few hundred yuan a month.

While the group loudly promotes its Belt & Road expansion (800+ hotels in 81 countries, 126,000 rooms, heavy push into Cambodia, Laos, Indonesia, Thailand…), its own domestic hotel managers are being driven into the ground and their basic social security is outsourced to the lowest possible level.

This is the quiet reality inside one of China’s most prominent state-owned hotel empires.

We are simply amplifying what this frontline manager asked us to say.

Please remember when you are booking “cheap” five star hotel when you are travelling in China, the affordability is build on the bodies of their workers. So called communist utopia.
