Honored to have co-signed this (👇) letter about Min Zin.
You know who didn't sign? Anyone from @UCBerkeley, where Min Zin earned his master's and became a PhD candidate.
It's an especially bad look for the university since in 2024 the International Liaison Department of the CCP rolled out the red carpet for a Berkeley delegation visiting the Yunnan Academy of Social Sciences -- the same organization that reportedly invited Min Zin for the visit on which he was detained.
Berkeley's response to the abduction of its alumnus has been to offer its "thoughts ... at this difficult time."
In fairness, Berkeley has millions of reasons to look the other way -- the school is awash in Chinese cash. According to @USEdGov, Berkeley has received ~$107 million in the last decade, putting it in the top 10 of all US universities for PRC funding. Half (~$52 million) is connected to work inside China, and a third (~$36 million) is from USG "counterparties of concern" such as Huawei and its subsidiaries.
U.S. students of China, take note! Your school's close "relationships" from decades of work with the PRC are about the CCP getting access and your school getting money. This is the "exchange" that both sides are so intent on protecting. Neither honest research nor your freedom is part of the deal.
