NATO Summit in Turkey Wraps Up — But Erdogan’s “Doorgift” Leaves Leaders in a Bind
The NATO summit in Turkey has successfully concluded, but Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s prepared gift has turned into a major headache: customized revolvers.
Each revolver was meticulously crafted for the respective country’s leader, engraved with their name, and even came loaded with live ammunition.
For most delegations, this “thoughtful” gift became an immediate problem. With strict gun import regulations in place, the vast majority of countries simply cannot bring such weapons home — not even for heads of state.
Some leaders handed the revolvers over to airport police before departure. Others left them with their presidential security details, likely to be locked away in some obscure armory, never to see daylight again.
The UK, after consulting its laws, determined it was impossible to bring the gun back and immediately handed it over to the British Embassy in Turkey for safekeeping.
The Belgian delegation opened their gift the latest — only after landing at the airport — and are now reportedly scrambling to figure out what to do with it.
(The bewildered Belgian team snapped this photo of Erdoğan’s gift right there at the airport.)
