Since global diplomacy has failed to free Jimmy Lai from Beijing’s clutches, hackers are taking the fight directly to the Chinese Communist Party's overseas propaganda network.
On May 28, 2026, a coordinated cyberattack defaced two prominent Chinese overseas United Front websites, replacing their homepages with photos of the imprisoned media tycoon and demands for his immediate release. The targeted platforms included the China-U.S. Friendship Exchange in California and the Panama Promotion of Reunification Association, both of which are known hubs for Beijing's foreign influence operations.
Originating from the underground forum https://t.co/I4jW0z4e1u under the banner #FreeJimmyLai, the hackers plastered the sites with confrontational messages in Cantonese and Spanish. This retaliatory attack follows intense frustration after a mid-May meeting where Xi Jinping flatly rejected U.S. appeals to release Lai, who was sentenced to 20 years in prison under Hong Kong's draconian National Security Law.
