🇨🇳 Chinese dissident sails over 300 km in a tiny inflatable boat to escape China
South Korean authorities have detained 68-year-old Dong Guangping, a former policeman and prominent Chinese dissident.
He spent nearly 30 hours at sea, crossing more than 300 kilometers from China’s Shandong province in a small 3-meter inflatable boat with a modest motor.
Fishermen spotted him approximately 70 km off the South Korean coast.
This was at least his fourth attempt to flee China. In 1999, he was dismissed from the police for signing a letter marking the anniversary of the Tiananmen Square massacre. He has been repeatedly arrested and imprisoned for his human rights activism.
In 2015, he and his family escaped to Thailand and received UN refugee status, but he was deported back to China, while his wife and daughter successfully reached Canada.
