China is cracking down on one of the internet’s most addictive drama formulas:
The rich CEO who falls in love with the poor girl.
These ultra-short “micro dramas” have exploded across Chinese apps, with episodes designed to be watched vertically on phones.
And the plots are usually insane.
A billionaire CEO secretly falls for a struggling waitress.
A poor girl marries into a powerful family.
An evil mother-in-law tries to destroy everything.
A hidden heir gets revenge.
A cold tycoon suddenly becomes obsessed.
But Chinese regulators say the trend has gone too far.
Authorities have pushed the industry to move away from what they see as vulgar, unrealistic, wealth-worshipping storylines that promote distorted ideas about love, marriage, and success.
They’ve already removed tens of thousands of micro dramas in wider crackdowns.
So yes, the “rich CEO saves poor girl” fantasy is officially under pressure.
Not because people stopped watching it.
But because too many people were.
