President Donald Trump has officially nominated Michelle (Korean name Park Eun-joo) today as the U.S. Ambassador to South Korea. This position has remained vacant since Trump took office, and now a suitable candidate has finally been found.
Michelle was born in Seoul, South Korea, and is a Korean American. She lived in Japan during her childhood and immigrated to the United States with her parents at the age of 20. During the 1992 Los Angeles riots, Korean communities were attacked. She stepped forward and devoted herself to public service, eventually becoming a social activist. She is also a well-known conservative figure, strongly opposing the expansion of the Chinese Communist Party, and is regarded as a representative of the Republican Party’s hardline stance on China. In 2020, she defeated a Democratic candidate in deep-blue California and was elected to the House of Representatives. Trump had endorsed her and publicly praised her as a patriot.
At a time when U.S.–China tensions are intensifying, this appointment carries significant symbolic meaning. It is both a signal to the Chinese Communist Party and a warning to Lee Jae-myung, who is seen as being supported by Beijing.
