During the 2014 Umbrella Movement, pro-Beijing groups besieged the paper’s headquarters. In an article titled “I can be a news reporter for my whole life” (我可以做一輩子新聞記者), she declared: “This is a war to defend press freedom and Hong Kong. We will never surrender.”
The #HongKong regime subsequently arrested and detained Chan in 2021 under the National Security Law.
On #InternationalWomensDay, her story underscores the human cost of the assault on press freedom and independent voices.
