🙋♀️ On International Women’s Day, we stand with #Tara Zhang Yadi and all women prisoners of conscience who remain behind bars. As a Han Chinese, Tara spent the past several years speaking up for #Tibetan rights and promoting Tibetan–Han dialogue through her writing.
In the summer of 2025, while returning to China to visit her family, Zhang Yadi was detained by state security authorities and later held at the Hunan National Security Detention Center on the charge of “inciting separatism.”
As of today, she has spent 221 days in detention.
Zhang Yadi’s case is not an isolated one. It forms part of a broader pattern of systematic repression in China affecting vulnerable groups, including women and ethnic minorities. We also wish to emphasize that oppression is not experienced solely because of the identity of being “a woman.” Feminism, beyond advocating for gender equality, also seeks to understand and address the multiple and intersecting forces behind the oppression of marginalized communities.
For decades, Tibetan women have faced widespread cultural destruction, arbitrary detention, and forced sterilization. Their religious beliefs have been stigmatized by the authorities, and the transmission of their language and culture is increasingly under threat.
We will not forget Tara Zhang Yadi, just as we will not forget all women who continue to live under oppression. May they soon win the freedom that is rightfully theirs.
