Today I think back to the day I first met #JimmyLai
We were supposed to meet in #HongKong but I was denied entry, and so we met a few months later, with his whole family, in London in 2017.
We became friends - and met whenever we could, in London, Taipei, New York.
We communicated regularly.
But what about?
About the situation in Hong Kong, our shared values of freedom, human rights and human dignity, our shared Catholic faith, our shared love of literature, art, music, cuisine, travel, philosophy, and our family life.
Are those criminal topics?
It appears so now in #China #CCP #HongKong. I was named 95 times in the judgment in his trial - just for discussing these topics.
In 2020, I was invited to be a contributor to the Apple Daily's English language edition - the greatest honour of my life. Every week for a year, until the newspaper was forcibly shut down, I wrote for the newspaper a weekly column. It was such a privilege.
On my wall hangs this drawing of the Crucifixion by Jimmy, which he drew in jail and then sent to me.
Every night as I go to sleep and every morning as I wake up, I see it.
Every day and every night, I remember Jimmy and pray for him.
He's my friend. He's my brother. And he's one of my inspirations.
