CHINA’S BIRTHRATE HITS RECORD LOW
China’s birthrate fell in 2025 to its lowest level since 1949, underscoring deepening demographic pressures despite new government incentives to boost fertility.
Births dropped to 5.6 per 1,000 people, with newborns falling by 1.6 million to 7.9 million. The total population declined by 3.4 million to 1.405 billion — the sharpest drop since the 1960 famine.
The decline threatens economic growth as the workforce shrinks and the population ages, straining pensions and social services. Beijing has introduced measures such as cash subsidies, longer parental leave, and easier marriage registration, including about $500 per year per child born from 2025 to age three.
However, experts say the incentives are insufficient. The drop is driven by fewer marriages and a shrinking pool of women of childbearing age, reduced by 16 million since 2020 — a legacy of the former one-child policy.
