The Islamic Republic was built on the narrative that the Shah was a coward who abandoned his country, while revolutionary leaders embrace martyrdom over retreat.

At 86, choosing exile over death would contradict everything he’s preached and reduce him to exactly what he’s always claimed to oppose.

Also, let’s not forget you’re talking about a Shi‘a cleric. He welcomes martyrdom; it is the reward for his struggle.

Finally, Khamenei lives very, very modestly — he wouldn’t be interested in living in luxury in exile.

Khamenei also hasn’t left Iran at all since 1989.

He has barely traveled within Iran — you won’t see him doing big tours of the countryside meeting with Iranians.

He barely leaves his compound.
