U.S. President Donald Trump said Ukraine is “not a democracy anymore,” arguing that the country has not held elections since the war with Russia began.

In a Politico interview published Tuesday, Trump noted, “They haven’t had an election in a long time… it gets to a point where it’s not a democracy anymore.”

Ukraine’s last presidential election took place in 2019, when Volodymyr Zelensky defeated Petro Poroshenko. A new election was planned for spring 2024, but Zelensky postponed it due to martial law, in effect since Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022.
