Did China ever learn from the mistakes of its own past?
Did China understand that imperialism and one-man authoritarian rule always lead to the same historical cycle — one that lasts roughly 300 years before collapse?
Mao Zedong once spoke of China’s “historical cycle of rise and decay”, and the Chinese Communist Party claimed it had discovered how to break that cycle.
But what did it rely on to do so? Democracy, elections, and freedom of speech — at least in theory — were supposed to be the safeguards that prevented any return to unchecked power.
Do those safeguards still exist today?
