Germany’s AfD party has hit a record 23.5% in polling, just 3.5 points behind Friedrich Merz’s CDU, amid outrage over massive post-election debt plans.
Merz pledged no new borrowing before the vote - then announced half a trillion euros in spending, sparking backlash from voters and conservative media.
The AfD called it “the biggest deception in post-war history” as 75% of Germans say they feel betrayed.
Merz now faces a coalition with the defeated Social Democrats while ruling out any deal with the surging AfD.
