.@SpeakerJohnson This ☝️ is so dishonest! First, you claim the Biden administration "chose to arm the Taliban." This is a gross misrepresentation. The Taliban did seize U.S.-made military equipment, but this happened because the Afghan military, which the U.S. spent $83 billion to build over two decades, collapsed. This was not a deliberate choice by the Biden administration. The actual value of the equipment left behind is far less than some exaggerated claims, and much of it is outdated or inoperable.
Second, you allege that American soldiers were left behind. This is simply false. While the withdrawal was chaotic and some American citizens and Afghan allies remained in the country, no U.S. soldiers were left behind. Efforts to evacuate those remaining continued even after the military withdrawal was complete.
You also describe the withdrawal as reckless, with devastating consequences. Let’s talk about that. The decision to withdraw was based on an agreement made by the Trump administration, which sidelined the Afghan government and negotiated directly with the Taliban. Trump released 5,000 Taliban prisoners, including their leader, and reduced U.S. troops to just 2,500, all while promising the Taliban a May 2021 exit, without any real exit strategy.
When Biden took office, he inherited a ticking time bomb. The Taliban had already seized most of Afghanistan, and Trump didn’t even bother to brief the incoming administration on the details. Biden faced a brutal choice: send over 10,000 troops back into Afghanistan to reignite a full-scale war or stick to the withdrawal timeline set by Trump. Thanks to the impossible situation Trump created, there were no good options.
So, Mike, before you try to rewrite history, remember who set the stage for this withdrawal. Biden was left to deal with the mess Trump created, and despite the challenges, he made the tough decisions necessary to end America’s longest war. The real recklessness was Trump’s disastrous negotiation and the chaos he left behind.
