Today is indeed the day. But as we await the sentencing, it’s important that more foreign media reporters get this case right as Xinqi Su has done here. It’s not just about the pro-democracy camp running a primary election (as often asserted by foreign media), it’s about talk of blocking supply (in Anglo parliamentary terms) or filibustering the budget (in US political terms) to get the Government to agree to democratise. And the convictions have arisen despite #HongKong’s Basic Law having explicit provisions for dealing with legislative deadlocks over the budget.

If blocking supply/filibustering the budget is a crime, then many politicians in democracies (including, in Australia’s case, Malcolm Fraser and his entire coalition party room back in 1974–75) would have been sent to jail over the years.
