Taking in heart-wrenching testimony at the @CECCgov "Bringing Home Americans Detained in China" hearing today. Case in point: Dawn Michelle Hunt is serving a life sentence in China, having narrowly escaped execution. Her brother Tim is testifying that a trip she thought she'd won was actually part of a drug trafficking scheme; says she was raped in prison.

There is no rule of law whatsoever in #China under the Chinese communist party #CCP, journalist and due diligence expert Peter Humphrey testifies. He himself was once unjustly detained, and overlapped with another prisoner for a month, interviewing him extensively and being certain of his innocence. He says there are as many as 300 Americans incarcerated without a fair trial, most on trumped up charges.

Harrison Li testified about his father, Kai Li, who is detained in China. Learning of Pastor Lin's release brings hope, but: "When will it be my family's turn?"

Backed up by Tim Hunt, explains how much they'd appreciate more support from U.S. diplomatic personnel, notably people who will become knowledgable about each respective case.

Peter Humphrey rates U.K. (for himself) and U.S. (for his wife) consular performance: the "nanny and messenger service" works well, but the service at the "higher political level" is "completely lacking."

"We can't treat China as a country under the rule of law in the way we understand the rule of law to be for our own citizens. You have to intervene," he says.
