Elvis Jamir Cruz-Ferrera, with a history of run-ins with the law, stands accused of involuntary manslaughter in the death of 19-year-old Old Dominion University student Lauryn Ni’Kole Leonard.

This incident, reported by the Virginia Pilot, shows the devastating consequences of lax immigration enforcement. Despite a deportation order six years ago, Cruz-Ferrera remained in the country illegally, and now a promising young student is deceased. Lauryn deserved better.
