The “Buddha bucket” is a fascinating artifact discovered in the Oseberg ship, a well-preserved Viking ship found in a large burial mound near the Oseberg farm in Vestfold county, Norway. The ship dates back to 834 AD and is considered one of the most significant Viking archaeological finds.

The “Buddha bucket” is a pail made from yew wood, held together with brass strips. The handle of the bucket is attached to two identical figures, both representing a man seated in the Lotus position, similar to depictions of Buddha. The figures have a peaceful expression with closed eyes and a flat head. Their breasts are ornamented with red and yellow champlevé enamel, and panels of millefiori, a glasswork technique producing distinctive decorative patterns.

Despite the resemblance to Buddha, the figure on the bucket is believed to have no connection to Buddhism. Instead, it’s thought to be of Celtic origin, likely crafted by monks in monasteries in what is now Ireland and England. The craftsmanship is of high quality and does not resemble items typically made in Norway.

The bucket was found in the burial chamber of the Oseberg ship, along with the remains of two women and various other artifacts. It’s speculated that the bucket might have been particularly valuable and possibly associated with a certain elite or social group.
