During World War II, the 761st Tank Battalion, also known as the "Black Panther" Tank Battalion, was one of the three armored battalions composed of African-American soldiers in the segregated U.S. Army. It was activated in 1942 and became the first African-American armored unit to see combat in the American Army. Led by white officers, the battalion was assigned to the Third Army under the command of Lieutenant General George S. Patton Jr.

The 761st Tank Battalion faced numerous challenges and discrimination during their service, but they proved their abilities and bravery on the battlefield. They fought in various European campaigns, including the Battle of the Bulge and the liberation of concentration camps. The battalion's tanks were equipped with 75mm guns, allowing them to effectively engage enemy positions and provide support to infantry units.

Despite their accomplishments, the 761st Tank Battalion faced racial prejudice and unequal treatment within the military. Their service and achievements played a significant role in breaking down racial barriers and challenging the notion that African-American soldiers were not capable of combat roles.
