Not a comment on this specific policy, but to give you a few examples of personal experience to show the CCP’s insidious practices.

1) Some years ago, when visiting family in China during new year holidays, a Twitter employee received calls from Chinese national security agents requesting a meeting. He evaded them until they threatened to visit his home in Yunnan. At the meeting, agents asked him to collaborate with them (the Twitter employee didn’t elaborate). Upon returning to the U.S., he revealed the incident on Twitter, China Change wrote about it, but he quickly DMed me asking me to pull it off from our site. I did.

2) In 2013-2014, over the span of a year, we investigated and wrote about a Chinese-American math professor at Wellesley College who collaborated with Chinese state media to smear a dissident professor at Peking University, and later sowed discord on Wellesley campus with complaints of McCarthyism and racism against him. On each his China visits, he was received by CCP’s units of United Front, and his aging parents routinely received gifts. He was given honorary titles. He threatened to sue me after we exposed him to the public and to the Wellesley community. I said, Bring it on. He never did.

3). In early 2000s, on a visit to China, my high school teacher (班主任) told me that she was asked by a local national security agent, also a former student of hers, for my contact. She ignored him, and only told me this episode when I visited her. I studied literature and you’d imagine I was pretty useless to them. It goes to show that they keep tabs on every Chinese student, perhaps - who knows - every immigrant from PRC in recent decades. Imagine how much interest they would have on Chinese Americans working on sensitive technologies and sciences?

A land of free doesn’t mean we don’t have enemies. We do, and they have been taking advantage of our free society and actively undermining and sabotaging the U.S. for decades.
