The stone is intricately carved with various symbols and images that represent different aspects of Aztec cosmology and mythology. It is believed to have been used as a ceremonial calendar and may have also served as a sacrificial altar.
The stone was rediscovered in 1790 and has since become an iconic symbol of Aztec civilization. It is currently housed in the National Museum of Anthropology in Mexico City.
