In the center of the brooch, an animal head is depicted, and the end-knobs are shaped as animal heads as well. This brooch was found in the tomb of a Norse woman, thought to be a shaman. She was found dressed in fine blue and red clothes adorned with gold thread, indicating her high status, possibly even royal.

The box brooch from Gotland was used as a container for “white lead,” a white dye that has been used in medicine for more than 2000 years. The brooch was fastened with a pin on the bottom just like any other brooch. They were used exclusively by women on the island of Gotland to hold together a cloak or a shawl.
